What Is a Sleep Score? How Drift Calculates Yours

A sleep score condenses a night's sleep into a single number — usually out of 100 — so you can see at a glance whether last night helped or hurt you, and whether your sleep is trending better or worse over weeks. Done well, it turns a pile of bedtimes and durations into one clear signal.

The catch: there is no industry standard. Every app and wearable weighs things differently, and most treat their formula as a black box. This guide explains what generally goes into a sleep score — and then opens the box completely on how Drift calculates yours, component by component.

Why a single number is useful (and where it isn't)

Sleep is multidimensional: how long you slept, when you slept, how regular your schedule is, and how restored you feel are all separate things, and research links each of them independently to health outcomes. A composite score is useful precisely because it stops you over-focusing on one dimension — plenty of people sleep long enough but at wildly irregular times, which carries its own risks (Windred et al., 2024, Sleep found sleep regularity predicted mortality risk more strongly than sleep duration).

Where a score is not useful is as a nightly verdict to stress over. Treat it like a fuel gauge: glance at it, act on the trend, and never let it become a source of anxiety in itself — sleep researchers have coined the term "orthosomnia" for exactly that trap.

Drift's formula: five components, 100 points

Drift's score is deliberately transparent. Every night is scored out of 100, built from five parts:

1. Duration (30 points)

Drift compares last night's sleep to your personal goal (eight hours by default — you can change it). Rather than a crude "more is better" line, scoring follows a bell curve centred on your goal: hitting it exactly earns the full 30 points, and the score falls away smoothly the further you land from it on either side. Sleeping nine hours when you need eight costs you a little; sleeping six costs more.

Very short nights (under five hours) are penalised extra, reflecting the sharp performance costs of severe restriction, and very long sleeps (over ten hours) are marked down too — routinely oversleeping is associated with poorer health outcomes and often signals fragmented or mistimed sleep rather than luxurious rest (Sleep Foundation).

2. Circadian timing (25 points)

Your body runs on an internal clock, and sleeping in sync with it matters almost as much as sleeping enough. Drift asks for a target bedtime and scores how close you actually got to it, again on a smooth curve — within about 45 minutes of target keeps most of the points. Consistently drifting later than 1 am attracts an additional penalty, because very late bedtimes push sleep out of alignment with the natural circadian dip. Waking in the natural morning window (roughly 6–9 am) earns a small bonus.

3. Consistency (25 points)

This is the component most trackers underweight and Drift deliberately does not. Drift looks at your recent nights and measures how much your bedtimes and wake times wobble, using a statistical spread designed for times of day (so 11:50 pm and 12:10 am correctly count as 20 minutes apart, not 23 hours). Tight schedules score the full 25 points; a spread of more than about an hour starts costing you meaningfully.

Wake time is weighted more heavily than bedtime (60/40), because your wake time — and the daylight that follows it — is the strongest anchor for your body clock. Irregular sleep timing has been linked to poorer academic performance, delayed circadian rhythms and worse cardiometabolic health, independent of duration (Phillips et al., 2017, Scientific Reports).

4. Subjective quality (10 points)

Numbers do not capture everything, so Drift asks how the night actually felt, on a scale of 1–5. This matters clinically: "non-restorative sleep" — waking unrefreshed despite adequate duration — is a recognised feature of insomnia in its own right. Your rating maps directly to points (a 5 earns all 10; a 1 earns none), so a night that looked fine on paper but felt terrible is honestly reflected in the score.

5. Lifestyle factor bonus (10 points)

Finally, Drift adjusts for the things you did that day which the evidence says shape sleep. You start from a neutral 5 points, then:

How to raise your score (in order of impact)

  1. Fix your wake time first. It anchors both the circadian and consistency components — half the score.

Honest limitations

Drift's score is computed from what you log (or import from Apple Health — see tracking sleep without a wearable), not from laboratory polysomnography. It cannot see sleep stages, and no consumer device measures those with clinical accuracy either. What it can do — accurately and transparently — is quantify the four things you actually control: how long, when, how regularly, and under what conditions you sleep.
